We start the programme with Haydn’s overture to his opera L’Isola Disabitata – not one of his better-known pieces, but it’s a wonderful overture, full of fire and fizzing with energy!

2021 is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Malcolm Arnold – one of Britain’s finest composers. His Serenade is a beautiful little work – 15 minutes of wit and lyrical melodies. It may have been written for comparatively small forces, but the colours and variety that Arnold draws from his orchestra are just breathtaking.

And to finish my personal all-time favourite Beethoven symphony. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 sometimes suffers a little from having the Eroica and the 5th Symphony on either side of it – but it’s an incredible work in its own right, with the most wonderful symphonic slow movement that Beethoven ever wrote. Tune in to hear the orchestra’s virtuosity and power taken to the limit!
