New CD from Ondine: Flute Concertos
Nielsen: Flute Concerto
Ibert: Flute Concerto
Arnold: Flute Concerto No. 1
Clara Andrada, flute
Frankfurt Radio Symphony
Jaime Martín, conductor
In this album Clara Andrada, principal flute with the Frankfurt Radio
Symphony Orchestra, performs three 20th century flute concertos with the
orchestra, conducted by Jaime Martín, himself an excellent flautist.
Clara Andrada is a Spanish musician, born in Salamanca in 1982.
BBC Music Magazine says: “For fluidity, nimble attack, breath control and range of colours she really takes some beating.”
Christian Hoskins in the Gramophone says: “Perhaps due to its brevity, Arnold’s Flute Concerto No.1, completed in
1954 and scored for flute and strings, is often described as a lightweight work. However, its 12-minute span includes episodes of mystery, poetry and tension, and Arnold’s scoring is masterly. The recording by the dedicatee, Richard Adeney, is an automatic recommendation but Andrada’s performance makes an equally strong case for this underrated work.”
