The death of Julian Bream on 14 August 2020, at the age of 87, will have struck a note of profound sadness among musicians everywhere – not least, among devotees of the music of Malcolm Arnold, where the guitarist occupied a very special place as the dedicatee of three of his most characteristic pieces. Nor does one need to be an aficionado of guitar music per se to recognise Bream’s outstanding contri bution to music’s wider world. He was not just synonymous with the guitar: he brought to vivid life the riches of the first Elizabethan age, both via his pioneering recitals with the tenor Peter Pears, and also via his own Julian Bream Consort.
