Performance Diary
The gravitational pull of the music is further downwards — the Mahlerian scale of this movement is maintained as the music unfolds — a half-remembered distant landscape, as English as Salisbury Plain, the Cotswolds, Scafell Pike or the Lake District — but without ‘folk’ elements: here is nature’s stark reality, by way of a contemplation of profound depth. In such a mood, Arnold bids us symphonic farewell. He finally got there.
