We know that composers write music out of what they are, but what they are isn’t just a matter of how they’re made but what they’ve experienced. I, for one, hear in Arnold’s later music as much social commentary as autobiography. Symphonies Nos.7 and 8 and the Field Fantasy do their best not to give away any secrets, but I’m sure one of their chief motivating themes is the loss of innocence.
